Groups & Audience Targeting
Last updated: May 2026
What segmentation does
Show different changelog content to different users. Example: enterprise sees migration notes, beta sees preview features, internal_user sees pre-release notes never visible to customers.
Creating groups
Open your project and click Groups in the project nav. Create named groups with a display name and a slug (e.g., display "Client Users", slug client_user). The slug is what you'll reference in JWT claims and per-item targeting. Team+ has no limit on group count.
Per-item targeting
Each release item can be restricted to specific groups. Unrestricted items are visible to everyone.
Passing groups via JWT
Sign JWTs from your backend with user group claims. Herald enforces visibility automatically.
Private changelogs
Require authentication for hosted changelog access via Settings → Visibility.
Share tokens
Generate secret URLs that bypass auth for investors, press, or external stakeholders.
